Wheeled Outdoor Patrol Robots: The Closest Knightscope Competitors
Wheeled outdoor patrol robots are the only category that competes with the K5 on its own terms, and there are three credible names: RAD's ROAMEO, Ascento, and SMP Robotics. Each one rolls a sensor stack around an outdoor site on a repeating route, recharges itself, and pushes detections to a monitoring interface.
RAD, a wholly owned subsidiary of Artificial Intelligence Technology Solutions, is the most direct product-line rival because its catalogue mirrors Knightscope's shape almost row for row. ROAMEO is the roving patrol unit, RIO is a mobile trailer, ROSA is a fixed edge device for loading docks, and AVA handles gates and entry points. SARA, RAD's orchestration software, ties the devices together. RAD publishes no pricing for any of them.
Ascento takes a different mechanical bet: a two-wheeled balancing robot rather than a wide, heavy chassis. The company markets 8-plus hours of battery with autonomous charging, a thermal, RGB and infrared payload, and a 95% uptime guarantee backed by 24/7 technical support. Its stated jobs are specific in a way that helps scoping: verifying perimeter integrity, checking doors and windows, recording property lighting, and controlling parking lots.
SMP Robotics is the outlier on commercial structure. Its Argus S5 line is sold through regional partners with a direct-purchase option, a quarterly software payment plan, or a RaaS arrangement, so a buyer who wants to own the asset rather than rent a service has somewhere to go. The company states IP65 protection and an operating range of -20C to +55C, which matters more than sensor counts at a site that actually freezes.
Indoor Patrol: The Gap in the Knightscope Line
Indoor patrol is the category where Knightscope has quietly stopped competing, and buyers evaluating it for a mall or hospital corridor should check this first. Knightscope's current line-up page lists the K5, the K1 Hemisphere, the K1 Blue Light Tower and a retrofit kit as deployable, with the K7, K1 Super Tower and K1 Capsule under development. The indoor K3 is absent from that page, and the old knightscope.com K3 product URL now returns a 404.
That leaves Cobalt as the clearest indoor alternative. Cobalt sells an indoor-only mobile robot built to work inside enterprise buildings, navigating corridors, open floors and elevators, with two-way audio and video for live interaction.
The important structural detail is that Cobalt's robot is not a standalone device. The company states plainly that the robot cannot be operated without the Cobalt Command Center, its 24/7 staffed monitoring service, and that it is sold as Robot-as-a-Service on an annual contract. That is a different purchase from a Knightscope subscription, where your own team can watch the feed. With Cobalt you are buying remote humans as well as a machine, which raises the recurring cost and removes a category of staffing work from your side of the fence.
Cobalt was acquired by Dean Drako in 2024 and now trades under the Cobalt AI name, so older coverage referencing Cobalt Robotics describes the same product line under previous ownership.
Fixed Towers and Stationary Units: The Cheaper Deterrence Layer
Fixed towers and stationary deterrence units solve most of what a buyer wants from a patrol robot without the cost or the mobility failure modes. A tower does not get stuck on a kerb, does not need a charging dock, does not slow down in snow, and covers the same view every minute of the shift.
Knightscope competes in this layer itself with the K1 Hemisphere, an eye-level stationary unit with roughly 210-degree HD video, two-way audio and strobe-and-siren deterrence, plus the K1 Blue Light Tower for outdoor perimeters and critical infrastructure. RAD's ROSA and AVA occupy the same ground for loading docks and gates. LVT sells solar-powered mobile surveillance towers that can be trailered to a retail lot or construction site and moved when the risk moves.
The operational tradeoff is genuine rather than a marketing point. A patrol robot's whole value is that its position is unpredictable and it can be seen approaching, which is what changes loiterer behaviour. A tower is a known fixed object that people learn to stand behind. Sites with a small number of real hot spots usually get more per dollar from towers. Sites with a large open area and no single choke point are the ones where a rolling machine earns its subscription.

Quadrupeds and Drones: When Legs or Air Beat Wheels
Legged and aerial platforms compete with Knightscope wherever the site defeats wheels, which happens more often than vendor demos suggest. Stairs, catwalks, grating, cable trays, gravel and steep loading ramps are ordinary features of industrial plants and ordinary obstacles for a wheeled ASR.
Boston Dynamics markets Spot for inspection, perimeter checks and remote investigation rather than as a guard robot, and it sells hardware alongside integration services rather than a security subscription. Ghost Robotics builds the Vision 60 quadruped, used at several US Air Force installations since late 2020; LIG Nex1 and Korea Investment Private Equity took a controlling stake in the company in July 2024. Asylon bridges the two worlds, pairing its Guardian aerial drone with a DroneDog ground robot and a Robotic Security Operations Center that coordinates patrols, verifies threats and manages escalation. It names Bayer, GXO Logistics, Kia Motors, Home Depot and Citizens Bank among its customers, and one customer testimonial describes inspecting more than 14 miles of fence line.
For industrial sites, Percepto sells AirMax drone-in-a-box units with its AIM software and holds beyond-visual-line-of-sight approvals from the FAA, EASA, CASA and Transport Canada among others, which is the regulatory hurdle that decides whether an autonomous drone programme is viable at all. Skydio sells the X10 with a dock for remotely launched autonomous missions, widely used for drone-as-first-responder work by police agencies. Aerial coverage is fast and cheap per acre, but it cannot open a door, escort a visitor or hold a position in high wind.
Fixed Camera Analytics and Manned Guarding: The Two Non-Robot Alternatives
The two alternatives that win the most Knightscope evaluations are not robots at all: better camera analytics, and the guard contract the buyer already has. Both deserve a place on the shortlist because they attack the same underlying problem, which is that nobody is watching the footage in time to act.
Verkada sells cloud-managed cameras, access control, alarms and intercoms on one platform, with AI-generated talk-down messages for deterrence. Ambient.ai takes the other approach and layers a vision model over existing cameras and access-control data, claiming elimination of more than 95% of false alerts and more than 150 verified threat signatures. If your incidents are being missed rather than un-deterred, analytics is the cheaper fix and does not need a charging dock.
Manned guarding remains the default for a reason. A guard can escort a distressed employee, make a judgement call, and physically intervene. No ASR on this page does any of those things. Guarding is billed as an hourly rate per post, and a single 24/7 post consumes 168 hours a week, which works out to roughly 4.2 full-time officers once relief, holidays and sickness are covered. That number, not the headline hourly rate, is the figure a robot subscription is really being compared against.
There is a wrinkle buyers rarely anticipate. Allied Universal, the largest guarding firm in the US market, is also a Knightscope reseller, having offered the K5 outdoor, K3 indoor and K1 stationary units alongside the operator interface, charging docks and support. It has separately partnered with RAD on concierge robots. Securitas runs a remote guarding service of its own. Asking your incumbent guard provider for a robot proposal is a legitimate route to a Knightscope deployment, and it may also produce a blended human-plus-machine quote that neither the robot vendor nor a pure guarding bid would have offered.
Which Knightscope Competitor Should You Shortlist
Shortlist by site geometry first, because form factor eliminates more vendors than price does. The scenarios below map the common cases we see in security robot buying research.
A large outdoor lot or campus with paved routes is Knightscope's home ground, and the K5 is a reasonable baseline. Run Ascento and SMP Robotics against it: Ascento if weather and terrain are the problem, SMP Robotics if you want to own the machine rather than rent it. Add RAD if fixed choke points matter as much as the roving route.
An indoor mall, hospital or corporate campus should start with Cobalt, since Knightscope no longer lists an indoor patrol robot. Budget for the mandatory command centre, and price a camera-analytics upgrade alongside it, because indoor sites usually already have dense camera coverage and the gap is triage rather than presence.
An industrial perimeter, substation, tank farm or mine is where wheels lose. Compare Percepto and Asylon for aerial coverage of long fence lines, and a quadruped from Boston Dynamics or Ghost Robotics for stair-and-grating routes that double as inspection rounds. Check BVLOS approval status before assuming a drone programme can fly unattended.
A small site, a single retail lot or a construction yard rarely justifies any patrol robot. An LVT tower or a RAD ROSA at the one location where incidents actually happen usually beats a machine that spends most of its shift covering ground where nothing occurs. This is the most common overspend we see: paying for mobility at a site with one hot spot.

How to Run the Quote Process Without Wasting a Quarter
Run every Knightscope competitor through the same three questions before you accept a demo, because the demos all look alike and the contracts do not. The questions are who watches the feed, what happens at the moment of detection, and what the exit looks like.
Who watches matters most. Knightscope bundles an operator interface for your team. Cobalt requires its own staffed command centre. Asylon runs a Robotic Security Operations Center. Those are three different labour models hiding inside three similar-looking subscriptions, and the one that suits you depends on whether you already have someone on a screen at 3am.
The detection-to-response gap is where most deployments disappoint. A robot that streams a person loitering to an unstaffed dashboard has changed nothing. Ask each vendor to describe, minute by minute, what happens between the detection and someone arriving, and who is contractually responsible for each step.
On exit terms, ask what happens if the machine underperforms. Ascento publishes a 95% uptime guarantee, which at least gives a number to write into a contract. Most vendors do not publish one. Ask for the uptime commitment, the remedy when it is missed, and the notice period, in writing, before signing anything longer than a year.
