Blue Light Towers: The Half of Knightscope People Miss
Knightscope's emergency communication business is larger in installed units than its robot fleet, and it came from buying CASE Emergency Systems in October 2022. That acquisition brought more than 7,000 blue light towers and emergency call boxes already deployed across the United States, plus production and logistics sites in California, Texas and New York.
These are the blue-topped emergency phones familiar from university campuses, airport car parks and rail stations. Press the button and it opens a voice line to a monitoring point. CASE's customer base already covered airports, universities, municipalities, rail operators, healthcare and federal government before the deal.
The retrofit kit is the commercially clever part. A campus that already owns 200 towers does not have to rip them out; the kit connects the existing hardware to Knightscope's network. For a facilities team, that turns a capital replacement project into a subscription line item on equipment already in the ground.
This matters when you are sizing a Knightscope proposal. A quote for a single K5 is a small slice of what the company usually sells into a campus, which is more often a mixed estate of towers, hemispheres and one or two mobile machines.
How Knightscope Pricing and Machine-as-a-Service Work
Knightscope does not sell its robots. Every machine is supplied under a Machine-as-a-Service subscription that bundles the hardware, software, connectivity, maintenance, firmware updates and replacement of the unit if it fails. There is no list price on knightscope.com today for any product. Every page routes to a consultation. Treat any hourly number you see quoted online as a marketing comparison, not a quote, and get the figure in the contract.
One thing the hourly rate does not include is somebody to act on the alert. The subscription supplies the machine and the console; unless you buy the remote command service or the agent service, your own staff still have to watch the feed at 3am. Who Uses Knightscope Robots?
Knightscope reports 434 clients across 42 US states, and lists retail, industrial, healthcare, education, critical infrastructure, corporate enterprise and government as its target sectors. It does not name most of them publicly.
The visible deployments cluster in a few places. Shopping centres and mall car parks were the earliest sites. University and corporate campuses use a mix of towers and one or two K5s. Parking structures and logistics yards use the machines for after-hours presence. Hospitals use stationary devices at entrances and in staff car parks more than mobile units.
Law enforcement is the highest-profile channel and the smallest by volume. Huntington Park Police Department in California has run a K5 in Salt Lake Park across several consecutive contract renewals, and the city has reported reductions in calls for service and crime reports during the programme. The NYPD leased a K5 for the Times Square subway station in autumn 2023 and did not renew after the two-month pilot.
Nobody buys these for arrests. The realistic job is deterrence, recorded evidence, and a way for a person in a dark car park to talk to someone. Facilities buyers who framed it that way have generally kept the contracts; agencies that framed it as a patrol officer replacement have generally not.

Knightscope Incidents and Criticism, Fairly Stated
Knightscope's machines have been involved in several widely reported incidents, all of them a decade or less old and all of them documented by named outlets. Any serious buyer should read them, and any serious vendor conversation should address them.
In July 2016 a K5 at the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto knocked over a 16-month-old child, bruising his leg and running over his foot. The company called it a freakish accident and apologised. In July 2017 a K5 at Washington Harbour in Washington, DC fell down steps into a fountain. In October 2019 a woman in Huntington Park tried to report a fight by pressing the emergency button on the robot itself and got no response; the button had not been connected to the police department.
The Huntington Park case is the most instructive, because it was a configuration failure rather than a robot failure. The hardware worked. The escalation path behind it did not exist. Ask any security robot vendor to demonstrate the full path from button press to a human answering, on your site, before signing.
The NYPD pilot drew separate criticism. The machine had to be escorted by officers during its subway shifts, which defeated the labour-saving argument, and privacy scholars raised questions about continuous recording in a transit environment. Civil liberties groups have consistently objected to persistent recording by private machines in public space. Knightscope's position is that the machines gather evidence and deter, and that clients control retention.
What Knightscope Does Not Do
Knightscope robots have no arms, no weapons and no legal authority. They cannot detain, restrain, touch or arrest anyone, and they cannot pursue. Every physical response is still a human response.
They also have real mobility limits. The K5 works in structured outdoor environments on flat, mapped, paved routes at walking pace. It does not climb stairs, does not use lifts unaided, and does not handle loose ground, snow banks or steep gradients. Sites with kerbs, ramps and mixed surfaces need a survey before anything is signed. The K7 is meant to address rough ground, but it is not yet shipping.
On sensing, the current Knightscope product pages describe people, vehicle, device and license plate detection. They do not describe facial recognition on those pages, although the capability has been referenced in older third-party coverage. If your jurisdiction or policy restricts biometric identification, get the exact sensing list written into the contract rather than relying on a web page.
