A robot vacuum navigates using lidar, a camera, or bump sensors. That one spec predicts its real-world behavior better than its suction rating does.
In the buying guides we publish here, navigation type is the first thing we check. It decides light sensitivity, mapping accuracy, and whether the robot can clean one room on command.
Lidar and camera-based systems both build and save a floor plan. A bump-sensor model builds nothing and cleans by trial and error instead.

How the Spinning Lidar Turret Measures Distance
Lidar navigation fires laser pulses from a spinning turret in a full circle and times how long each pulse takes to bounce back. That round-trip time becomes a distance measurement.
The map is built from physical measurements, not from a picture. That is why lidar works the same at midnight as it does at noon.
The laser carries its own signal, so it never depends on room light the way a camera does. Roborock, Dreame, and most current Ecovacs flagships build their maps this way.
Newer direct time-of-flight sensors in 2026 models scan faster and finer than the older triangulation lasers they replaced. A lidar map is usually accurate enough to trust on the very first cleaning run. You get real room boundaries and a usable no-go-zone map before you have told the app anything about your home.
What vSLAM Sees Instead of Measuring
Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (vSLAM) uses a forward-facing camera instead of a laser. It matches each new video frame against landmarks it already recorded, such as a table leg or a doorframe.
Several of iRobot's Roomba i, j, and s-series models navigate this way. Trifo licenses a similar vSLAM system to smaller budget brands, including its own Ironpie and Lucy lines.
Skipping the laser turret lets these bodies sit lower, which helps them clear furniture. The tradeoff is that the robot needs enough ambient light to recognize the landmarks it is tracking.
In a dim hallway, or under a bed frame with repeating shapes, a camera can lose track of where it is. It then has to restart part of its map.
Several 2026 flagship models now pair a lidar turret for the base map with a second camera purely for real-time obstacle recognition. Pets, cables, and shoes get identified visually while the laser still handles the actual positioning.
What Bump-Sensor Navigation Skips Entirely
A bump-sensor robot vacuum has no lidar and no camera. It rolls forward until a bumper hits something, turns, and repeats, without ever building or saving a map.
The Eufy RoboVac 11S Max is a current example: no camera, no lidar, no Wi-Fi radio at all. It runs entirely from onboard buttons and its remote.
No map means no room selection and no no-go zones. It also means no way to send the robot back to the exact spot it stopped at when the battery ran low.
Coverage from bump navigation is inefficient by design. The robot can cross the same open patch of floor three times and still miss a corner behind a chair leg. It has no memory of where it has already been.
That trade buys a genuinely low price, and it is a fair one in a single open room with few obstacles. It stops being fair across a multi-room floor plan, where a missing map turns a 20-minute job into an hour of random passes.
Does a Robot Vacuum Need Wi-Fi to Work?
No robot vacuum needs Wi-Fi to navigate, clean, or dock. The sensor, the map, and the motor control all run on the robot's own onboard computer, not in the cloud.
What Wi-Fi actually adds is remote access. That means starting a cycle from your phone, scheduling a time, drawing a no-go zone, and voice-assistant control.
On a lidar or camera model, the map itself is usually built and stored on the robot regardless of connectivity. The app just displays a copy once the robot reconnects.
A genuinely offline robot, like the Eufy 11S Max above, has no Wi-Fi hardware to begin with. It collects no usage data and needs no account, ever, at the cost of losing scheduling and remote start.
Most current lidar and camera models sit in between. They clean fine locally day to day but need a working connection the first time you set up scheduling or smart-home routines.
What Matter, HomeKit, and Zigbee Support Looks Like
Matter is a shared smart-home standard built by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, with Amazon, Apple, and Google among its backers. It lets one device work natively across competing apps instead of needing a separate bridge for each one.
Support for robot vacuums specifically is recent, and it is still uneven across brands. Do not assume a whole lineup qualifies just because one model does.
Roborock added native Matter support across its lineup in April 2025. That let its robots pair directly with Apple Home (HomeKit), Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings without a separate hub.
Ecovacs and iRobot have followed with their own Matter-enabled models and firmware updates, including iRobot's newer Roomba Combo line. Coverage still varies model by model, so check the exact model's own spec sheet.
Zigbee is the case people most often get wrong. No major robot vacuum brand puts a Zigbee radio inside the robot itself. Every model on the market connects over Wi-Fi instead.
Zigbee only enters the picture through a hub like SmartThings. A hub can group a Zigbee door lock and a Wi-Fi or Matter robot vacuum under one app and one set of automations. That is hub-level grouping, not the robot speaking Zigbee directly.
What Happens to Your Floor Map and Camera Data
A robot vacuum's floor map and any images its camera captures are two different kinds of data. Manufacturers treat them differently in their own privacy policies.
iRobot's privacy policy states that map data stays local to the robot unless the owner opts in to viewing it in the app. Once that happens, a simplified version goes to iRobot's cloud, encrypted in transit and at rest.
iRobot says it does not sell that data. An owner can request deletion, or clear it locally with a factory reset.
The real controversy here is not hypothetical. In 2022, Amazon announced a $1.7 billion deal to acquire iRobot, and regulators immediately asked what a combined home-mapping and shopping-and-Alexa data set would let Amazon do.
The European Commission opened a formal investigation the following year. On January 29, 2024, Amazon and iRobot mutually terminated the deal after the Commission signaled it would veto the acquisition. iRobot remains an independent company today.
Camera data has its own, separate failure mode. A 2022 MIT Technology Review investigation found that images from pre-production Roomba J7 test units were routed to human data-labeling contractors at Scale AI. Those contractors were training the robot's object recognition.
At least 15 of those images, including one of a woman on a toilet, ended up shared in social-media groups by the contracted workers. That happened to test units, not retail robots. It still shows the real risk with any camera-equipped vacuum: the data can leave the manufacturer's hands through a training pipeline, not just through a hacked account.
Account-level hacking is also a documented risk. In 2024, security researchers found that hackers took over Ecovacs Deebot X2 units in several US cities. The break-in relied on a weak spot. The four-digit PIN protecting the robot was checked only by the phone app, never by the robot or Ecovacs' own servers.
Attackers used the exposed camera feed and speaker to harass owners in their own homes. Ecovacs shipped a firmware fix afterward.
Matching Navigation to Your Home
A studio apartment or a single open room with light furniture is the one case where a bump-sensor model is genuinely a fair trade. There is little map value to lose, and a real price to save.
Anyone with more than one room, a pet, or stairs to avoid should treat a bump-only robot as a downgrade dressed up as a discount. The missing map costs real cleaning time every single run.
Camera-based vSLAM is worth choosing when a slim body matters more than dark-room performance, in a home with good daytime and evening lighting. Lidar is the safer default everywhere else, including any home cleaned overnight or with blinds regularly closed, because the laser does not care whether the lights are on.
Our answer on camera versus lidar would change if a vSLAM system added infrared illumination that closed the low-light gap without a second turret. That is currently the one clear advantage lidar still holds.
Check the model's own spec sheet for its navigation type, its Matter or HomeKit certification, and its map-data opt-in setting. That is how you settle how a specific robot vacuum navigates and where its map ends up.
