Set Up a Fictional Character First

Choose a virtual AI companion by its conversation style, memory controls and access to voice. Then try a fictional character before you share personal details or pay for a plan.

Our comparison of published features from Replika, Kindroid and Nomi separates three choices: how you want to talk, which details you can edit and what continued access requires.

For a first character, invent a travel-story co-writer named Mira. Give Mira a short description such as: "A curious writing partner who prefers stories set on trains." Choose text if you want written conversation, or look for voice access if speaking is part of the appeal.

Give Mira an invented preference, such as a favorite fictional station. Ask an ordinary question about a story, discuss another topic, then ask Mira to recall the station. Correct the preference and ask again later.

This is an exercise you can try, not a result from a product test. Use the exchange to decide whether the available controls suit you, then compare the required plan and renewal terms before paying. Avoid real names, health records, workplace secrets and other people's photos in the exercise.

Choose Virtual AI Companions by Conversation Style

Replika, Kindroid and Nomi publish different character controls, so start with the kind of adult conversation you want to have.

Replika describes companion conversation, memory, appearance customization, calls and selfies. Its Pro help page describes voice messages and background calls as Pro features. If calls matter to you, include the required plan in your decision rather than assuming every feature is free.

Kindroid advertises text, voice and video calls, with roles including creative co-writer and language partner. Its personality documentation describes editable character details and a greeting that establishes tone and style.

Nomi advertises custom backstory and preferences, voice chats, hands-free calls, optional proactive messages and group chat with multiple characters. Nomi also describes sharing images and links for discussion. Nomi says you can start free.

These are published features, not rankings of conversation quality. Pick the character controls you want to try, then use the fictional exercise to decide whether the conversation suits you.

Memory Controls for Virtual AI Companions

Memory controls let you enter or change character details, but an editable field does not guarantee perfect recall.

Kindroid describes Key Memories as a place for important enduring facts. Its personality controls also include optional Response Directives and Example Messages. You can use a directive to describe a desired response style, while an example message shows the style you have in mind.

For Mira, a harmless Key Memory could say that the favorite fictional station is called Blue Lantern. A separate directive could request short replies about the writing project. These are proposed entries, not claims about how Kindroid will respond.

If recall or correction is central to your choice, decide whether the responses meet your needs before paying.

A saved preference is different from a conversation recalled later. A field you can edit gives you a place to change the written instruction. It does not establish that every future answer will follow it. Memory also does not establish task automation, privacy or transfer of a character to another service.

Voice and Avatar Choices

Voice and an avatar serve different purposes in a virtual companion app. Voice gives you a way to speak or listen. An avatar gives the character a visible appearance.

Choose text when the written exchange is enough for your conversation. Choose voice when speaking is part of the activity, and include any plan requirement in the comparison. Kindroid advertises voice and video calls, while Nomi advertises voice chats and hands-free calls.

Replika describes appearance customization and selfies as well as calls. Its Pro documentation places voice messages and background calls in Pro, so an appearance feature alone does not tell you whether the voice mode you want is included.

An avatar on a screen cannot move through your room. A voice feature also does not establish compatibility with a physical robot. If shared-room movement is the reason for buying, compare the hardware separately.

Do not treat an attractive image as evidence that conversations stay on your device. Kindroid's FAQ says its servers process messages to generate replies. Read the service terms that apply to the app you choose before entering information you want to keep private.

A Purchase Checklist for App Subscriptions

A subscription decision starts with the checkout for the features you intend to use. A free start or a published feature list does not establish the price or limits of every paid plan.

Match the plan to one repeatable activity. If you want spoken conversations, identify whether the plan includes the relevant voice or call feature. If you want to write with a character, decide whether text and the available personality controls are enough.

Compare the renewal period and total before approving payment. Set a spending limit for yourself, and leave the purchase uncompleted if the terms do not fit it.

The Replika Pro page describes Pro features. The Kindroid FAQ describes account access after expiry. Those pages address different services, so do not assume their terms are interchangeable.

Device support, export and deletion also belong in the decision. Replika lists iOS and Android availability, while its virtual assistant help page says reminders, calculations and live information are not reliable. Replika also says it cannot control external device apps. Choose another route if those jobs are your reason for buying.

  • Compare the billing period, renewal and total before paying.
  • Identify whether text, voice or calls require a particular plan.
  • Look for usage limits that affect the conversation mode you want.
  • Find the cancellation route for the service or store handling payment.
  • Consider account deletion, export availability and device support separately.

Account Deletion Is Different From Cancellation

Canceling payment and deleting an account are separate actions. Stopping a subscription does not, by itself, establish that a character or its data has been deleted.

Kindroid's FAQ says an account becomes read-only after subscription expiry or exhaustion of the free preview. Chats and media can still be read, exported or deleted. Sending messages, regenerating responses, calls and proactive messages require a subscription or trial.

Kindroid also says deleting an account does not cancel its subscription. Use the relevant documented service or store controls to stop payment, and treat account deletion as a separate decision. Kindroid notes that billing and logistical records may be retained.

Kindroid's FAQ says Rewind can remove recent messages, but older messages cannot be deleted individually through that control. Read the Kindroid FAQ for the applicable controls rather than assuming a character deletion immediately erases every backup.

Nomi describes a separate deletion process in its privacy policy. The policy says account deletion can be requested through Account Settings and personal information is deleted within about 28 days after confirmation. It also describes exceptions for some training or communication archives and information retained for legal reasons.

Those examples do not establish Replika's deletion or billing terms. Read the Replika privacy policy for its data terms, and use the applicable payment controls if you decide to cancel.

Physical Companion Robots for Shared Rooms

A physical companion robot fits a shared-room interaction that requires movement or a response to touch. An app-only companion fits text or voice conversation without a dedicated robot body.

A robot also needs suitable floor and charging space.

Choose hardware if movement in the room is part of the activity. If you only want text or voice while away from home, start with an app. Compare app and hardware choices in the apps vs. robots guide and broader hardware choices in the companion robots guide.

Someone seeking human care, emergency help or a real relationship should turn to an appropriate person or service. The apps and robot described here are not established substitutes.

An Adjustable App for Adult Conversation

An app with character controls is a sensible starting point when adult conversation is the goal. You can choose a fictional role and see whether the available text or voice mode fits the activity.

Kindroid's editable personality fields suit a buyer who wants to write character instructions. Nomi's published group-chat feature is relevant if conversation among multiple characters is the goal. Replika's published appearance and relationship customization gives buyers another set of character choices.

None of those descriptions establishes which app will produce your preferred replies. Use the same fictional question and preference across any apps you consider, then decide whether the controls are worth their plan terms.

The app-first recommendation changes if you want a device to move or react physically in a shared room. In that case, use the companion robots guide to compare hardware.

Your Next Step

Before paying for virtual AI companions, try the fictional-character exercise and read the terms for the conversation mode you want.

FAQs

How do virtual AI companions work?

Virtual AI companions are software that provides conversation on a phone or computer. Features differ by service: Kindroid, for example, says its servers process messages to generate replies.

Can I use a virtual companion without a robot?

Yes. A virtual companion app provides conversation without a dedicated robot body. An app alone cannot move through a room.

Does canceling a subscription delete a companion?

Do not assume cancellation deletes a companion. Kindroid says an account can become read-only after subscription expiry, and it treats account deletion separately from subscription cancellation. Other services have their own terms.
