How to Read a Medical Robotics Program

How to Choose Between Them
If the goal is a US surgical-robotics research career, Johns Hopkins LCSR, Michigan Robotics, and CMU Robotics Institute are the three programs where medical-robotics work is a first-class specialization rather than a lab option. Hopkins has the deepest surgical partnership; Michigan has the strongest standalone Robotics Department; CMU has the biggest raw robotics faculty.
If the goal is a research career in Europe with a salaried PhD position, TUM MIRMI, ETH, Imperial Hamlyn, and UCL Hawkes Institute all pay their PhD students and have direct hospital partners.
