How a Field Line Marking Robot Works

A field line marking robot follows a stored field layout using satellite positioning, no string lines and nobody pushing it.

At The Bot Scout, we cover outdoor working robots alongside industrial arms. This category is the clearest example of satellite navigation replacing a manual trade skill rather than assisting it.

Raw satellite positioning is accurate to a few metres, making it useless for marking a penalty box. Real-time kinematic (RTK) correction solves that problem by comparing the robot's reading with a second receiver whose exact position is already known. This pulls the error down to centimetres. In the specification table for the Turf Tank ONE, Turf Tank lists its positioning technology as "RTK-GNSS & Local Base Station." GNSS stands for global navigation satellite system.

That local base station is a physical piece of kit that you site on the ground before marking. FJ Dynamics includes one in the factory configuration of the PaintMaster Mini, along with a tablet and a handheld point marker.

TinyMobileRobots takes the other route. The specification table for its TinyLineMarker Sport says "Base Station: Not needed" and confirms support for GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, and BeiDou signals. Instead of using a ground reference, the machine leans on four satellite constellations. For a grounds team, that means one less box to site, charge, and keep from being stolen.

Whichever machine you use, setting up a field is a one-time job. You mark the field's corners and key points once, the layout is stored, and every repaint follows that stored map. TinyMobileRobots handles this through a tablet with preloaded templates, and one person operates the machine after on-site training.

Only TinyMobileRobots Publishes a Marking Accuracy

TinyMobileRobots publishes a marking accuracy of 1 to 2 centimetres, or 0.4 to 0.8 inches, on both of its machines.

That figure is what makes an unsupervised repaint possible. A line repainted to within two centimetres of last week's line reads as a fresh coat rather than a double line, so a groundskeeper does not have to re-string a pitch to keep it looking marked.

Turf Tank and FJ Dynamics both publish full specification tables without an accuracy tolerance in them. Turf Tank describes the Turf Tank ONE as delivering reliable positioning for initial marking and overmarking, and FJ Dynamics lists dimensions, speed, and capacity for the PaintMaster Mini but no stated precision. Ask either one for a tolerance figure in writing before you compare it against the TinyMobileRobots number.

Accuracy on any of these machines depends on a clear view of the sky, because every one of them is positioning from satellites. Grounds ringed by tall stands or cut into woodland are the hard cases, and no maker publishes a degradation figure for them.

So test the worst corner of your worst field rather than the middle of the best one. A robot that holds two centimetres on an open training pitch and drifts beside a covered stand has failed on the field where the fixture is played.

How Long Each Field Takes

A TinyLineMarker robot marks a full 11-a-side soccer field in about 25 minutes.

Published times vary far more by sport than by machine. A baseball diamond takes roughly 20 minutes on the TinyLineMarker Sport, and an American football field takes about three hours, because the numbers and hash marks carry many times the painted length of a soccer layout.

Marking speed is capped low on purpose, since paint has to land evenly. TinyMobileRobots paints at up to 1 metre per second and drives between jobs at up to 2 metres per second. Turf Tank rates the Turf Tank ONE at 1.3 miles per hour, which it also gives as 0.6 metres per second. FJ Dynamics rates the PaintMaster Mini at 2 kilometres per hour and the larger PaintMaster Pro at 1 to 3 kilometres per hour.

TinyMobileRobots is therefore the fastest painter of the group on published figures, at roughly 3.6 kilometres per hour against Turf Tank's 2.2. On an eight-pitch site that gap is most of a morning.

Battery runtime sets the ceiling on one session. Both TinyLineMarker machines run five hours on a charge. Turf Tank publishes 4 hours from a 680 watt-hour pack and says that covers at least four full-sized 11-a-side soccer fields in one go. The PaintMaster Mini runs 2 hours from 190 watt-hours and recharges in 2 hours, and its batteries swap out, so a spare set removes the wait entirely.

Paint Capacity Decides How Many Fields per Load

Paint capacity, not battery life, is what usually sends these robots back to the shed.

The TinyLineMarker Pro X carries 18.9 litres, or 5 gallons, and a full 11-a-side soccer field consumes about 3 gallons of it. TinyMobileRobots states that one load covers a full soccer complex, three baseball diamonds, or five lacrosse fields, which is the difference between a morning of marking and a morning of refilling.

Turf Tank ONE holds 5.3 gallons and Turf Tank says that paints an American football field without refilling, which is the hardest single-field test in the category. The TinyLineMarker Sport holds 10 litres, or 2.6 gallons, and the PaintMaster Mini holds 8 litres.

The FJD PaintMaster Pro is the outlier at 25 litres standard, with a 20 litre option. It is also by far the heaviest machine here, so the extra paint comes at a cost your turf pays.

Match the tank to your field count rather than to your budget. A site with one pitch is never limited by a 10 litre tank, and a site with six pitches on a Sport-sized tank spends its morning walking to and from the paint store.

What Separates the Five Machines

Weight and base-station setup separate these machines more than paint capacity does.

The PaintMaster Mini is the lightest at 21.85 kilograms excluding paint, and the PaintMaster Pro is the heaviest at 73.4 kilograms, which is more than three times the Mini. Turf Tank ONE sits at 60 kilograms, or 132 pounds. On soft winter ground the heaviest machine is the one that leaves marks the paint did not put there, so weight is a turf question rather than a handling one.

Base-station setup is the other split, and it falls two against one. Turf Tank and FJ Dynamics both work from a local base station you site on the field. TinyMobileRobots states a base station is not needed on the TinyLineMarker Sport. A team marking a single home ground will barely notice the difference, and a team moving between sites all week will notice it every day.

Price transparency is where the three genuinely diverge, and it is the one axis on which Turf Tank gives you nothing.

Which Sports the Templates Cover

The TinyLineMarker software carries templates for more than 50 sports.

Soccer, American football, baseball, lacrosse, and track and field are covered across the category, and FJ Dynamics lists soccer, American football, baseball, and lacrosse fields directly on the PaintMaster Mini page. Turf Tank runs dedicated pages for football, soccer, baseball, and lacrosse.

Template breadth earns its keep on a shared site. A multi-sport facility that switches a field between soccer in autumn and lacrosse in spring is doing a full re-layout twice a year, and that job is the one a stored template removes entirely.

A single-sport site gains far less from it. If you mark one soccer layout in one place all season, the template library is not the reason to buy, and marking speed and tank size should decide it instead.

Where These Robots Do Not Work

A field with blocked sky view is the clearest case against buying one of these machines.

Every machine here positions from satellites, so grounds ringed by tall stands or cut into woodland are the ones to test first. None of the three makers publishes an accuracy figure for those conditions. Book the demo on your most enclosed field rather than your best one, and treat a vendor who will only demo on an open pitch as having answered the question.

Sites that mark permanent lines in the same place forever are the second poor fit. These robots earn their cost by redrawing layouts that move, so a facility with one fixed layout is paying for repeatability it already has from a string line and a template.

Cold weather is a real constraint rather than an inconvenience. FJ Dynamics gives the PaintMaster Mini a working temperature range of 5 to 45 degrees Celsius and an IPX5 water resistance rating, and the TinyLineMarker Sport is rated rain compatible. A machine that will not start below 5 degrees cannot mark a January fixture list in a northern climate, so ask for the operating range before you buy for winter sport.

What Would Change Our Recommendation

Two changes would move the advice above.

Turf Tank publishing a price would make it the default recommendation for many buyers. It already publishes a full specification table and it is the most recognised brand in robotic line marking, so price is the only thing keeping it out of a like-for-like shortlist you can build without a sales call.

A published accuracy tolerance from Turf Tank or FJ Dynamics would settle the one comparison nobody can make today. TinyMobileRobots states 1 to 2 centimetres and the other two state nothing, so a buyer choosing on precision has one number and two blanks.
