Is the Kawasaki CORLEO Real?

The Kawasaki CORLEO is real as a physical model. It is not real as a working vehicle. In the guides we publish here we track this category release by release, and that split misleads more readers than any other detail.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries revealed CORLEO at the Osaka-Kansai Expo preview on 4 April 2025. What sat on the stand was a full-scale machine that can stand and hold a pose.

The footage of a rider leaping across rocks is computer-generated. New Atlas put it plainly after seeing the reveal: the video is pure CGI, and the prototype is capable of standing and posing.

That is why the April date sends people looking for a prank. CORLEO is not an April Fools' joke. It is a design study Kawasaki has since committed real money and a real team to.

How Kawasaki CORLEO Is Meant to Work

CORLEO runs its legs on electricity, and it makes that electricity on board. A 150cc hydrogen engine charges a battery pack, so the four leg-drive units draw from the battery rather than from the engine directly.

Hydrogen comes from a canister mounted at the rear, and the exhaust is water vapour. Choosing a hydrogen generator over a fuel cell keeps the machine closer to engine parts Kawasaki already builds, which matters if it ever has to be serviced in the field.

The rider does not steer with a wheel. Body weight is the primary control input, so the machine reads a lean forward, back, or into a turn, the way a horse reads a rider.

Each foot ends in a bifurcated rubber hoof. The split shape lets one foot find grip on a surface that is not flat, and the rear legs carry an extra joint to absorb landing shock.

A small colour dash shows hydrogen level, navigation, and the rider's centre of gravity. In the dark, the machine is meant to project arrow markers onto the ground ahead so the rider can see the intended line.

Kawasaki CORLEO Price and Release Date

There is no Kawasaki CORLEO price. Kawasaki has published no figure, opened no order book, and named no dealer, so every number circulating on video thumbnails and Indian price aggregators was invented by someone else.

The dates Kawasaki has committed to are far out. As Gear Patrol reported, the company set up a dedicated team, the Safe Adventure Business Development Team, to take CORLEO from concept toward production.

That team's public targets are a riding simulator by 2027, a working machine deployed as on-site mobility at World Expo 2030 in Riyadh, and commercialisation around 2035.

The most recent public appearance is still a model. Kawasaki's newsroom announced on 19 August 2026 that it would exhibit a full-scale CORLEO mock-up at gamescom in Germany. That is the stage the hardware is at, nine years before the commercialisation target.

Treat a 2035 target as a direction of travel rather than a delivery date. Gear Patrol's report on the programme notes that the machine shown at Expo 2025 was less capable than the concept intends, and a decade-long programme has many places to slip.

Why a Rideable Legged Machine Is So Hard to Finish

A rider is the hardest payload a legged robot can carry, because the load moves on its own. A quadruped balancing a crate can model that crate as a fixed mass, and a rider shifts, grabs, and panics.

Power is the second wall. Legs burn energy at every step to hold a pose that wheels get for free. CORLEO carries a hydrogen generator rather than a battery alone for that reason, and BEX drops onto wheels the moment the ground allows it.

Then there is what happens when the machine gets it wrong. A wheeled vehicle that loses drive rolls to a stop, and a legged vehicle that loses balance puts a rider on the ground from riding height.

That failure mode is the reason Kawasaki built a simulator into the roadmap before the vehicle. Riders have to be trained on the machine's limits before the machine is allowed near them, and the simulator is the cheap way to find out where those limits sit.

It also explains the shape of the whole programme. The 2030 Expo target puts CORLEO on a controlled site with trained riders and flat prepared ground, which is a long way from the mountain in the video.

CORLEO vs BEX, the Kawasaki Quadruped With Riders on Video

Kawasaki has already built a rideable four-legged robot, and it is not CORLEO. BEX appeared at the International Robot Exhibition in Tokyo in 2022, and people rode it there.

BEX is modelled on an ibex, a wild goat, and it came out of the Kaleido humanoid programme Kawasaki Robotics has run since 2015. It carries roughly 100 kg, which is enough for a rider or a load of construction material.

The design trick is that BEX does not have to walk everywhere. It kneels onto wheels mounted at its feet and knees to cover flat ground quickly, then stands back on four legs when the ground gets rough.

Controls are handlebars rather than body weight. BEX is the less futuristic machine of the two, and a rider can get on it today. Nobody can get on CORLEO at all.

Who Should Skip CORLEO

Anyone who needs to move across rough ground in the next few years should ignore CORLEO entirely. Buy a side-by-side, a trail bike, or a pack animal, because a 2035 target cannot carry a job that exists now.

Two things would move CORLEO from concept to serious. The first is public video of the machine walking unsupported with a rider aboard, filmed rather than rendered.

The second is a price and an order route. Kawasaki opening a deposit page, naming a dealer network, or publishing a figure would change the verdict here. A deposit page is the moment a concept becomes a product you can plan around.

Until one of those happens, the useful thing to watch is the simulator. A riding simulator targeted for 2027 is a real, checkable milestone, and missing it would say more about the 2035 date than any press release.
